Cement Industry Description:

Cement is one of the basis in the modern construction works. Cement is a binder and its origin is Mesopotamian from the third millenium BC and is based in lime. After that Romans maked cement in a large scale with pozzolan rocks (volcanic).

Currently the main part of cement (Portland cement) is made from calcined limestone. In a second phase calcined limestone (Clinker) is grinded and mixed with other ingredients to make the finished cement.

2 are the maín processes in cement manufacturing:

-Clinkerization process: To transform the limestone into clinker (calcined limestone)
-Grinding process: Clinker is grinded and is blended with a small amount of gypsum to make finished cement.

Other kinds of cement include Slag cement or pozzolan cement with Ground-Granulated Blast Furnace Slag and Pozzolan volcanic rocks respectively.

Don’t be confused between Cement and Concrete it`s not the same. Concrete is a mixture of cement with gravel, sand and water and frecuently with steel reinforcing bars (Rebars).

At IndustryAbout.com Concrete Industry is clasified at their own branch of the Building Materials Sector.

Industrial Types:

Main Industrial Types:

1-Integrated Cement Plant: Or simply called Cement Plant. Both clinkerization and grinding processes take place. For the clinkerization process a cement plant has a rotary kiln. Some cement plants make clinker for its own and also for other facilities specialised in the grinding process only.

2-Cement Clinker Plant: Makes only clinker and they also has a rotary kiln. Its clinker is grinded in other separated facilities.

3-Cement Grinding Mill: Clinker is grinded and gypsum is added to make finished cement. These factories have not rotary kilns.

Secondary Industrial Types:

1-Cement Terminal: Transports bulk cement, clinker or cement based products to the big consumers. They are often situated at the main ports.

2-Cement Packing Plant: Facilities specialised in the packing of cement, frecuently in sacks of 40 or 50 Kgs, or other sizes.

3-Fibre Cement Plant: At these factories cement is mixed with 10% fibre products mainly for roofing. The dangerous Asbestos is used in some countries as a fibre product, in other countries they use cellulose fibre to prevent asbestosis. Heavy heath and environmental damages have it’s origin in asbestos fibres.

4-Dry Mortar Plant: Dry mortar is a product based in cement with other materials as sand, limestone powder and hydrated lime. Dry mortar is used to join bricks to build a wall.

5-Pozzolan Quarry: It’s the source of Pozzolan rocks to make that kind of cement.
