24 August 2014. Since 2009, oil prices have enjoyed a prolonged period of remarkable stability characterized by annualized volatility significantly below its long-term average.

And though volatility has ticked up markedly in recent months due to the escalating conflicts in Russia and Iraq, oil prices haven't risen much above $115 a barrel and have actually declined sharply in recent weeks.
